High capacity link across the Baltic Sea facilitates international cooperations for KTH and Ventspils University College
Details about the pioneering link between the Royal Institute of Technology and Ventspils University College in Latvia will be released during an exhibition that will take place on May 27th in Electrum, Kista.
On May 27th from 10 to 14 the BalticOpen.net project at KTH invites interested visitors to Electrum and a demonstration of an interactive workspace, iSpace, between Ventspils University College (VeA) and The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH).The iSpace is a high-technology room that shortens distances between students and researchers from different parts of the world. Through the iSpace room far apart scientists can work as if they were colleagues in the same office. Teachers can broadcast their lectures all over the world. However, iSpace solutions require much bandwidth to provide high quality services. For this reason, the BalticOpen.Net has set up a high capacity link between the two universities, across the Baltic Sea - a unique bilateral connection of its kind.
The link is also important- as a high capacity solution - in that it connects Latvia and Ventspils University College with the international academic world. It offers a great opportunity for VeA to announce itself to the rest of the world and for KTH to extend its relations.
Thanks to an agreement between Hulvent and the city council of Ventspils, it has been possible for BalticOpen.net to procure optical communication equipment from Lumentis and radio communication equipment from Åkerströms to connect the two universities.
